Past and Present Dinner.

Friday 28th October 1982.

Guest speaker:

Tony Cordle (Glamorgan C.C.C.)

But not all were past! What a night it was, what a night. Those present, they came from here there and everywhere. Our President, Jim 'Lanky' Williams, still as straight and upstanding as his finger when he gave you or your opponent out, no favours! Harry McEntee, Chairman, the only non player. Our senior past player John Rice, still sprightly, but stumpers last well. George Miles back from exile in Swansea. Bill Perkins skipper in 1950 on a nostalgic visit to see old friends. Wyndham Lewis from Cardiff, on the strength of one game only, but that was the day we beat Neath, then the South Wales Association League Champions. Jim Ambrey, former fast bowler with at least three sons - does this not personify the family of cricket and of course Haverfordwest, the oldest cricket club in Wales.

And that brings us to the present - they are not so bad. Harrison Allen Bowl at last in 1981, much coveted and a team effort not only by the players but supporters to. let us reflect on where the dinner was held, at the Clubhouse, Dale Road. How it came there but by the co-operative effort.

What about the event itself, by the initiative of former skipper Donald Twigg, a wonderful idea which clicked and so long now may it continue.

Those of us who were privileged to be there and enjoy our lovely meal will have most happy memories of the first Past and Present Dinner. We hope when the now 'present' are 'past' they will equally enjoy themselves and continue to be cricketer's everywhere, but especially in Haverfordwest.
